In the fall, cranes migrate south from their breeding grounds in northern and eastern Europe. On their way, the birds make extended stops in Germany to feed for the onward flight. Well-known gathering spots are located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, and Lower Saxony.

Cranes are characterized by sensitive flight behavior. If humans approach the animals too closely, the groups take flight. This consumes energy reserves that the birds need for long-distance migration.

Visitors should use designated viewing platforms and observation blinds for watching. These facilities provide a view of the resting areas without the birds perceiving the presence of humans as an immediate disturbance.

Recommended equipment includes binoculars or a spotting scope with a tripod, as the distance to the resting areas is often several hundred yards. Conspicuous clothing should be avoided to avoid disturbing the animals in the open landscape.

Dogs must be kept on a leash at the resting sites, as they are perceived as a threat by the birds. Leaving paved paths in the protected areas is also prohibited in order to protect the resting and feeding grounds.
